PRACTISING SCALES WITH STEP LEARNING

On this page I want to show you how to use Step Learning to practice a blues scale. You can use the method to learn a new scale, or to build up your speed.

We`re going to break the scale down into its mechanical elements, then put it back together using steps. Repeat each stage as necessary.

Set your metronome to play the scale in 16th notes (4 notes to a beat). Now, break it down . Practice the right hand while damping the strings with your left.

First looping on each string:

Now crossing the strings:

Pay attention to the right hand mechanics.

Now double speed and let the strings ring:

Now double the speed again and play the first exercise on open strings:

Crossing the strings:

Now bring in the left hand:

String crossing:

Now practice the scale by steps.

Repeat each step until you`re comfortable with it before going on to the next.

Continue adding notes as shown until you can play the whole scale.

Leave yourself enough time to rest between each step and prepare the next.

If you miss notes at any time, go back to the previous step and pick it up from there.

To work on speed, first practice steps at a metronome mark a little higher than the maximum tempo you can play the scale.

Then cut the tempo to around 70% of this and practice repeating ( looping ) the scale up and down several times.

I have shown the method coming down the scale - of course you should practice going up as well by starting at the bottom and reversing all directions.
